Transportation for Peel District School Board students is provided by Student Transportation of Peel Region (STOPR). The transportation policy outlines eligibility for transportation and other important information.

The Peel board provides busing for students with significant physical or developmental challenges, and for students in contained special education classes who meet the distance requirements. For any inquiries, please call 905-890-6000.

Parents can also visit the STOPR website and enter their address to determine if their child is eligible for busing, and to find out the bus stop and route information.

Active and Sustainable School Transportation Charter

Peel District School Board (PDSB) supports Active and Sustainable School Transportation (ASST) to promote physical activity, reduce congestion, improve air quality, and enhance community safety. In June 2024, PDSB signed an ASST Charter, reinforcing its commitment to providing support, resources, and training for sustainable transportation.

Transportation eligibility distances

Students residing within their schools attendance boundary and living in excess of the following distance criteria from their school are eligible for transportation:

  • Kindergarten to grade 1 students: 1.0 km
  • Grades 2 to 4 students: 1.6 km
  • Grades 5 to 8 students: 2.0 km
  • Grades 9 to 12 students: 3.8 km

The eligibility distances measured are the shortest, appropriate walking route along sidewalks, roadways and pedestrian walkways, from school property line to home property line. To determine whether or not your child is eligible for transportation, visit the Student Transportation of Peel Region (STOPR) website www.stopr.ca, click on "Am I Eligible for Transportation” and enter your address details.

Beginning the last week of August to the end of June each year, all transportation information, including bus stop location and pick-up and drop-off times, can be accessed through www.stopr.ca. Click on “Parent/Student Login” and login or create an account. To ensure the security and privacy of information, the Ontario Education Number (OEN) will be required which can be found on the student’s report card.

Note: Courtesy ridership for the 2021-2022 school year has been suspended. Please read the letter from Peel Public Health for more details.

Safety tips for students who ride the bus

Help make sure your child stays safe in and around school buses by reinforcing the following safety reminders. View the Ride the school bus parent fact sheet to learn more about bus safety.

Tips for riding the bus

  • Take a seat as quickly as possible, put belongings under the seat and stay seated.
  • Never stick anything out of the window, including part of your body.
  • Don't eat snacks on the bus—if a choking incident happens, it may be difficult for the driver to help.
  • Wait until the school bus stops before standing up to exit.

Tips for exiting the bus

  • When getting off the bus, take two large steps away from bus. If you have to walk in front of the bus, do so at least three metres (10 giant steps) away from the bus.
  • The driver must be able to see students exiting the bus and will give a signal when it is safe to cross. If more than one student is crossing in front of the bus at the same time, they should cross in single file.
  • Children must never reach for something that is under the bus without the driver’s permission. Let the driver know that something is under the bus or wait until the bus moves out of the way.

A school bus is considered an extension of the classroom and all students must behave in a safe and appropriate manner while travelling on a school bus. If a student misbehaves, the school Principal has the authority, under policies established by the Board, to discipline and/or suspend a student’s transportation privileges.

Inclement Weather

To ensure the safety of staff, students, and their families, when the weather forecast calls for bad weather and unsafe road conditions, the Peel District School Board may decide to cancel buses and in-person learning or shut down the entire system due to severe snow or ice.

Bus cancellation days

If buses are cancelled due to inclement weather, schools will remain open to students and staff, students enrolled in in-person learning will attend schools. Students will not switch to remote learning.

Buses are cancelled

This message means that only schools whose transportation has been cancelled will be impacted. Schools will remain open to staff and students for in-person learning (please note that at times, transportation is not cancelled board-wide).

How will you know if buses are cancelled or schools are closed?

In anticipation of inclement weather days, the decision to close schools or cancel buses will be shared by 6:15 a.m. on the Board’s Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts.

Information regarding cancellations or closures will also be available through:

Please note: If no closures or cancellations have been announced by 6:15 a.m., then buses are running and schools are open.

Full system closure days

In the event of extreme weather conditions or other environmental situations that develop prior to the beginning of the school day, it may be necessary to close schools and board offices. These situations are rare and constitute our second level of response. In these cases, all staff and students will be informed that all schools in the Peel District School Board will remain closed for the day. Closure of the schools includes cancellation of all activities located in the schools including childcare, night school and permits.

As always, the safety of our students and staff is our highest priority. We want you to be safe on your way to and from school, and we will do our best to ensure that happens as we make our decisions based on the weather and road conditions.

Young Rider Transportation Day

Each year in August, STOPR will host Young Rider Orientation Day to help introduce kindergarten students to school buses prior to the first day of school. Check back to in Spring 2020 to view the orientation day for the 2020-21 school year.
